Scott Powerline Adds GTC-550; Celebrates 20th Anniversary

March 25, 2020 By pmsnow

Scott Powerline and Utility Equipment recently added a new Tadano Mantis GTC-550 to its inventory at ConExpo 2020, North America’s largest construction trade show for the lifting, mining, utilities, asphalt, concrete, earthmoving and related industries.

“Tadano Mantis Cranes have a great reputation in the industry. They’re tough. They’re versatile. They’re unmatched in performance and reliability.” said Jeff Johnson, Executive Vice President and COO at Scott Powerline, at the massive show in Las Vegas.

ConExpo also gave Tadano Mantis a chance to honor it valuable partner, as Scott Powerline and Utility Equipment celebrates turning 20 in 2020. We were excited to present Jeff and his team with a 20th Anniversary crystal plaque, and to display the GTC-550 with the SPL commemorative logo.

The Scott Powerline tale is a classic American success story of hard work and service, and here is some of that inspiring detail:

The Scott Powerline story began in a cotton field outside of Tallulah, LA., with a chance meeting between Tom Scott, Jr. and Irby Construction Company.  An enduring relationship between Mr. Scott and Irby brought Scott Truck and Tractor, a farm and general construction equipment distributor founded in 1939 by his father Tom Scott, Sr., into the world of utility-related construction and maintenance.  Since that day, over forty years ago, Scott has provided contractors and providers in the powerline, telecommunication, and other related utility industries with industry-recognized products and unsurpassed service.  Scott equipment has served on numerous projects from Alaska to Florida, Canada to California – not only that, but many of the employees of Scott Powerline have chewed much of the same ground supporting that equipment.  According to Tom Scott, Jr., our company’s founder, “Service to the customer is priority #1.  That commitment is the basis of our success in the past, present and future.”

That commitment to service, coupled with the recognition of enormous opportunity in the industry, led Mr. Scott to “spin off” the Powerline division and form Scott Powerline and Utility Equipment, L.L.C., on March 31, 2000.  At the time, Scott Powerline employed no more than 13 employees and worked out of a small office in Monroe, LA – today, we’ve more than quadrupled our workforce operating out of a much larger facility in Monroe as well as a location in McDonough, GA.”

Scott Powerline and Utility Equipment is headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana and has a service center in McDonough, Georgia. Scott offers everything from Mantis cranes to boom trucks to bucket trucks to pressure drills and tracked utility vehicles.

Tadano Mantis Cranes appreciates the Scott Powerline partnership over the last 20 years, and looks forward to a bright future together. Here are some fun photos from over the years:

Versatile GTC-1200 Stars on 85/385 Interchange Project

December 2, 2019 By pmsnow

The 85/385 Gateway Project in Greenville, South Carolina is expected to be “a premiere engineering achievement resulting in a signature infrastructure project that will make a positive difference to all of those who travel the Upstate.” Joint venture contractor Flatiron-Zachry looks forward to creating a postive change to a busy traffic area for years to come.

The SCDOT says this major undertaking – which includes ten new bridge structures (two flyovers) – will improve safety for the traveling public, provide a financial boost to the local economy and increase the capacity of the interchange so it may function more efficiently for many years to come. The improvements will create a new interchange within the general footprint of the current interchange by staging construction of the new lanes, ramps and bridges while maintaining traffic. And that’s where the GTC-1200 plays a starring role.

Tadano Mantis’ 130-ton powerhouse has worked on the Gateway Project for two years, performing many applications. The crane’s versatility has been a key for success, but the efficiency of the 155-foot, full-power telescoping boom has been just as important. Flatiron-Zachry Equipment Manager Perry Taggart described how the GTC-1200 allowed them to maximize productivity on a confined job site, “It has been big for us to be able to walk under, around or between the existing bridges and go right to work. Then at the end of a shift, we can walk back out and leave the Railroad tracks open to GE (who has a major facility nearby). We couldn’t have done that with a conventional crane.”

The GTC-1200 has done an array of different tasks close to the interstates/bridges, all while being able to keep the roads open. Taggart said that Flatiron-Zachry has used the crane to set form work and concrete bridge beams, do vibratory and diesel pile driving work and set retaining walls, and that it has been “very good” at all applications.

On a recent visit to the South Carolina job site, the GTC-1200 was driving steel H-piles (which were 70 feet long and weighed 6,230 pounds each). The project team has used both an APE 200 vibro-hammer and an ICE I-36 diesel hammer for piling work.

Flatiron-Zachry’s design and construction work will transform the intersection of Interstates 85 and 385 in Greenville. The Gateway Project will allow more progress and help alleviate congestion throughout the western part of South Carolina, and we are proud to see the Tadano Mantis GTC-1200 playing a key role.

TADANO MANTIS FEATURES GTC-800 AND GTC-500 AT ICUEE 2019

September 20, 2019 By pmsnow

Tadano Mantis exhibited two of its GTC Series cranes at the 2019 International Construction & Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE). The popular GTC-800 (88 US tons) was on display, and the newest addition to the GTC Series — the 50 US ton capacity GTC-500 — made its trade show debut in Louisville, Kentucky.

The GTC Series of telescopic boom crawler cranes were created for actual job site operating conditions. Market-leading out-of-level load charts allow full-rated capacities on up to 1.5° slopes and strong lifting capabilities up to 4°, eliminating the need for ground preparations to achieve a perfectly level lifting base. Real, useable maximum capacity ratings, pick-and-carry capabilities, and automatic load chart switching for operating slope and track position set the GTC series apart in performance and ease of use. These dynamic machines meet the requirements of our core markets – power transmission, bridge/heavy civil and foundation construction – while expanding the broader appeal of the cranes towards more general lift applications.

The GTC-500 features a 4-section full power boom that allows continuous telescoping with load to the maximum extended length of 113’ 10” (34.7 m). The main boom is complemented with a 28.9ft / 49.9ft (8.8m / 15.2m) bi-fold jib with 5°, 25°, and 45° offsets. An optional Heavy Configuration Counterweight package (28,200 lb /12,791 kg) provides increased lifting performance at longer radiuses.

The GTC-500 has an operating weight of 103,900 lbs (47,128 kg), so it can ship in one standard truckload. The 50-ton machine is powered by a Cummins Tier 4f, Euromot stage IV QSB6.7 diesel engine rated 260 hp (194 kW) @ 2,200 rpm. The GTC-500 boasts a maximum unladen gradeability of 85%, and an unladen ground pressure of 9.3 psi (0.65 kg/cm2). The standard track shoe is a 31.5” (800mm) 3-bar semi-grouser, with optional 35.4” (900mm) wide 3-bar semi-grouser and flat shoe options also available.

At 88 US tons, the GTC-800 is the largest sub-100 ton tele-boom crawler on the market and features a full power, 5-section boom with maximum extended length of 141’ 1” (43.0 m). It is designed for flexibility – performing well for lift work, while also excelling at out-of-level, pick-and-carry, and foundation work. The main boom is complemented by a 33.1ft / 58.1ft (10.1m / 17.7m) bi-fold jib with 3.5°, 25°, and 45° offsets.

The GTC-800 is powered by a Cummins Euromot stage IV, US EPA Tier 4f, QSB6.7 diesel engine rated 231 kW (310 hp) @ 2200 rpm. The travel system features 2-speed track drives with maximum speeds of 2.11 mph (3.4 km/hr) and a maximum unladen gradeability of 78%. The standard track shoe is a 35.4” (900mm) wide 3-bar semi-grouser. Optional 31.5” (800mm) 3-bar semigrouser, plus 35.4” (900mm) and 31.5” (800mm) wide steel flat shoes, are also available.

A new 22,500lb (10,206kg) standard counterweight configuration is being introduced on the GTC-800. Allowing additional flexibility for users, this configuration allows for 2-truck transport while maintaining max rated capacity.

Both the GTC-800 and GTC-500 are equipped with OPTI-WIDTH™, allowing for limitless combinations of symmetric and asymmetric track extension positions with no requirement for pinning track widths at fixed points. OPTI-WIDTH™ load charts can provide over a 30% lifting capacity improvement for asymmetric vs. symmetric positioned tracks at the same width.

Tadano Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of its Founding

February 4, 2019 By pmsnow

On August 29, 2019, Tadano celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. We would like to express our gratitude toward all our stakeholders for their invaluable support.

Masuo Tadano, the founder of Tadano, left Takamatsu for Asahikawa, Hokkaido, to start a welding business. That day, August 29, 1919, is the day we refer to as the date of our foundation. At that time, welding technology was gaining ground and developing rapidly outside of Japan, and its introduction in Japan was only beginning. Captivated by the sparks of welding, Masuo Tadano was convinced that the technology would make a positive contribution to society and ventured to start a business in Hokkaido.

Tadano developed Japan’s first hydraulic truck crane, the OC-2, in 1955, and now we have set a long term goal of becoming No.1 worldwide in the lifting equipment industry, trusted and preferred by our customers. Guided by the spirit of “Sozo (Creation), Hoshi (Contribution), and Kyoryoku (Cooperation),” which continues to live on as Tadano’s business objective, we are committed to continue offering products and services that are useful to society.

The world is presently in a state of great instability and we have entered an era of complicated, rapid, and extreme changes. Moving forward, we must fight two battles: the battle right in front of us and the battle with the current era. The first is the battle right in front of us. Each year and each month we must continue to fight the battles in front of us or there will be no tomorrow. However, if that is all we do, we may survive today but will have no future beyond tomorrow. The use of IoT and AI technology has increased dramatically. Cars and trucks are heading in the direction of full electrification, signaling the death of the internal combustion engine. We are on the brink of a technological revolution which will greatly change the world. Unless we fight the battle with this era there will be no future for us.

2019 will also be a new start for us toward the future. To pursue further excellence for the world and the future, we are committed to continue offering products and services that are useful to society under Tadano’s aspirations that have endured since the time of its founding.

Tadano Mantis Awarded Two LLEAP Awards

December 20, 2017 By pmsnow

Tadano Mantis was recently awarded two LLEAP Awards by Lift & Access Magazine for New Product and OEM Developed Feature. The GTC-600 telescopic boom crawler crane was awarded the Silver LLEAP award in the crane category. OPTI-WIDTH™, Tadano’s system for asymmetric track extension, was awarded the Silver LLEAP award for OEM Developed feature. Tadano Mantis was the only mobile crane manufacturer to win a LLEAP (Leadership in Lifting Equipment and Aerial Platforms) Award in 2017.

GTC-600 (66 US ton capacity)

The Tadano Mantis GTC-600 is the third of the new design GTC-Series telescopic boom crawler cranes. The GTC Series follows the concept to design and build a telescopic boom crawler crane that meets the requirements of the growing Tadano Mantis core markets of power transmission, bridge and civil, and foundation construction while expanding the broader appeal of the crane towards lift-based markets. The GTC-600 design project was managed by Tadano Mantis and included collaboration with Tadano, Ltd. in developing the purpose-designed, Tadano-built telescopic boom and the integration of Tadano winches, jib, hydraulic cylinders, AML-C Rated Capacity Indicator and Hello-Net telematics.

The full power, 4-section 37.7ft – 118.1ft (11.5 m – 36.0 m) hydraulic boom is designed to perform exceptionally well for lift work, while also being capable of out-of-level, pick-and-carry, and foundation work. The round boom is manufactured specifically for the Tadano Mantis telescopic boom crawler cranes by Tadano Japan.

OPTI-WIDTH™ – OPTIMAL lifting performance at any track WIDTH

The powerful and user friendly Tadano AML-C Rated Capacity Indicator has afforded the capability of asymmetrical outrigger configurations on Tadano rough terrain cranes for many years. The global development coordination within the Tadano Group companies has brought this asymmetrical setup technology to the telescopic boom crawler crane product segment. OPTI-WIDTH™ is Tadano’s trade name for asymmetrical track positioning on the GTC Series of telescopic boom crawler cranes. OPTI-WIDTH™ is standard on all Tadano Mantis GTC-600 and GTC-800 telescopic boom crawler cranes.

Tadano Mantis GTC-Series telescopic boom crawler cranes with OPTI-WIDTH™ are the only cranes on the market capable of limitless combinations of symmetrical and asymmetrical track width setups. Tadano Mantis telescopic boom crawler cranes do not require pinning of the track frames in fixed width positions, so it is ideal for the crane user to be able to position the track width optimally for their lift work and to have the proper load charts automatically selected by the AML-C system. OPTI-WIDTH™ load charts for asymmetrically positioned tracks have significant lifting capacity enhancements when compared to those for symmetrical tracks.

A comparison of the mid-extension track width of the Tadano Mantis GTC-800 with a symmetrical mid-mid track position vs. an asymmetrical min-max track position [at the same operating width] shows capacities up to 67% higher over the max extension track side when compared to the symmetrical over side capacity. OPTI-WIDTH™ incorporates zoned load charts, rotational position sensing, and function soft stops to ensure that the crane operator cannot swing with a load into a zone where the crane will be out of capacity.

The Tadano AML-C Rated Capacity Indicator detects track position using robust, non-contacting, embedded position sensors. Zone optimized load charts are automatically selected by the AML-C based on the position of each track. Tracks can be extended or retracted to any width and are held in position without the use of pins to fix track width.

The OPTI-WIDTH™ feature on the Tadano Mantis GTC-600 and GTC-800 adds a new dimension to the lifting capabilities of these cranes allowing the crane operator to achieve OPTIMAL lifting performance at any track WIDTH.

Tadano Mantis Adds GTC-350, 35 Ton Capacity Telescopic Boom Crawler, to the GTC Series Cranes

September 18, 2017 By pmsnow

TADANO MANTIS Corporation is introducing the newest addition to the GTC-Series of cranes – the GTC-350 with a 35 US ton capacity (35t) telescopic boom crawler crane. This new introduction brings the features and benefits of the GTC-Series to the smaller size class cranes offered by Tadano Mantis.

Superior Capacity: The 35 US ton capacity at 10 feet radius base rating of the GTC-350 is significantly higher than other units in the similar size class. As with all Tadano Mantis cranes, the 35 ton rating is a real, useable capacity with a “level” ground load chart that allows for operation on slopes of up to 1.5° so that the crane can be used to its full capabilities without the requirement of ground preparations to give a perfectly level lifting base. The load charts offer full chart pick-and-carry capacity through 360°.

Tadano Boom Design: The 3-section full power boom allows continuous telescoping with load to the maximum extended length of 89’ 3” (27.2 m). The boom is purpose designed for the GTC series crane and manufactured by Tadano Japan to give high lifting capacities as well as be suited for heavy duty work such as foundation, pick-and-carry, and work on slopes up to 4°. The long main boom is complimented with a 23’ 6” – 42’ 0” (7.2 m – 12.8 m) extendable jib that offsets at 5°, 25°, or 45° for a maximum tip height of 135’ 9” (41.4 m). Load charts for jib operation allow for lifting on slopes up to 2.5°.

OPTI-WIDTH™: Only Tadano Mantis offers the capability for infinite symmetrical or asymmetrical track positions on telescopic boom crawler cranes. The powerful hydraulic track extension system on the undercarriage can adjust the operating width of the crane from 9’ 10” – 15’ 10” (3 m – 4.8 m) overall width (with 29.5” [750 mm] wide track shoes) to provide the optimal lifting base based on site conditions. Tadano Mantis telescopic boom crawler cranes do not require pinning of the track frames in fixed width positions, so it is ideal for the crane user to be able to position the track width optimally for their lift work and to have the proper load charts automatically selected by the AML-C system. OPTI-WIDTH™ load charts for asymmetrically positioned tracks have significant lifting capacity enhancements when compared to those for symmetrical track positions. OPTI-WIDTH™ incorporates zoned load charts, rotational position sensing, and function soft stops to ensure that the crane operator cannot swing with a load into a zone where the crane will be out of capacity. The crane utilizes the full capabilities of the Tadano AML-C Rated Capacity Indicator and has operating load charts for 1.5°, 2.5° and 4° slope with automatic out of level load chart switching based on the cranes position on the jobsite. It is also possible for the operator to set work zone limits for swing angle, height, and radius, and the crane has function soft stops as operation approaches these pre-set operating limits.

Compact Dimensions: The standard configuration of the crane has compact dimensions of 9’ 10” wide x 43’ 1” length x 8’ 2” height (with 29.5” wide track shoes) [3 m wide x 13.4 m length x 2.5 m height (with 750 mm wide track shoes)]. Optional track shoes are available and can reduce the minimum operating and transport width to 8’ 6” (2.6 m) and the overall height can easily be reduced to under 8’ 0” (2.4 m) to allow this low profile crane to access sites that other cranes just can’t because of their height. Transport weight of the crane with the standard equipment package is 71,500 lbs (32,432 kg) and the unladen ground pressure is 7.6 psi (0.53 kg/cm2)

Efficient Power: The crane is powered by a Cummins Tier 4f QSB4.5 diesel engine rated 173 hp (129 kw) @ 2,200 rpm. Engine throttle control is by auto-idle control, adaptive throttle control, or by foot pedal control. The load sensing, power controlled hydraulic system optimizes the hydraulic output to the diesel engine power output for highly efficient operation and control. The swing system is controlled by a separate closed loop hydrostatic transmission for superior swing performance – in either free swing, or hydrostatic controlled swing – and the maximum swing speed is 2.2 rpm. The travel system features 2-speed track drives with maximum speeds of 2.1 mph (3.4 km/hr) and a maximum unladen gradeability of 70%.

Telematics with Hello-Net: Telematics monitors machine work history, position data and maintenance data. This information can be accessed free of charge through the Tadano Hello-Net internet portal.

Productivity enhancing options:

• Boom mounted auger system can be mounted to the boom base section or to the second stage of the boom for variable radius drilling up to 54 feet (16.5m) at any position through the 360° rotation of the crane. The auger system can utilize auger drives with a maximum digging torque of up to 14,500 lb-ft.
• WP-750, 2 person, 750 lb (340 kg) capacity work platform can be mounted to the main boom or the 23’ 0” (7m) offsetable jib for a maximum platform height of 120 feet (36.6m). Hydraulic tool circuit with hose reel.
